Why see The Nerd?

The tale of the Nerd and the Savior

If someone saved your life, you'd go out of your way to help them, right, without even considering the consequences? This is precisely what Larry Shue's comedic play The Nerd explores. Director Brandon Weinbrenner stages his take on the production at Houston's Alley Theatre. A must-see for all comedy fans, especially if you love a splash of questionable morality!

What's it about?

The play follows a burgeoning architect by the name of Willum Cubbert, a modest man and a landlord to his two friends Tansy and Axel. One day, during a house party, Willum is surprised by the appearance of a stranger, who turns out to be Rick Steadman, a man who saved his life in Vietnam. Rick soon moves in and takes over Willum's life, but not all is as it seems...

Comedic Date Night Material

If you want to unwind, and you like one liners, great physical comedy, and jokes suited for the era of the 1980’s or so The Nerd makes for a really great date night! We saw it tonight and laughed the whole way through the show. I’d classify this as an adult comedy, so leave the kids at home for this one. The set is really fabulous, props are cool. The actors gave stellar performances. The guy playing The Nerd is hilarious, and the rest of the cast all have their moments of hilarity. There’s a kid actor who dead falls after fainting and the theatre erupted in applause it was so funny! Go see it, and have some fun! The theatre itself was beautiful and had a lot of people to help. ... Read more

Sensitive Joke Subjects (but funny overall)

A few jokes are rough (mocking slow learners and Queen of England who’s passed by now) probably should have been removed for today’s time. Cast is animated and very lively. It’s like watching an old sitcom with the audience as a laugh track. If you can give in to the crass jokes of the playwright you can appreciate the show. Director did an outstanding job with the movement, show never has dull moments. Especially with the three characters in the “waldgrave” family. They are a hoot! Enjoy! ... Read more
