Comedic Date Night Material

If you want to unwind, and you like one liners, great physical comedy, and jokes suited for the era of the 1980’s or so The Nerd makes for a really great date night! We saw it tonight and laughed the whole way through the show. I’d classify this as an adult comedy, so leave the kids at home for this one. The set is really fabulous, props are cool. The actors gave stellar performances. The guy playing The Nerd is hilarious, and the rest of the cast all have their moments of hilarity. There’s a kid actor who dead falls after fainting and the theatre erupted in applause it was so funny! Go see it, and have some fun! The theatre itself was beautiful and had a lot of people to help.

Sensitive Joke Subjects (but funny overall)

A few jokes are rough (mocking slow learners and Queen of England who’s passed by now) probably should have been removed for today’s time. Cast is animated and very lively. It’s like watching an old sitcom with the audience as a laugh track. If you can give in to the crass jokes of the playwright you can appreciate the show. Director did an outstanding job with the movement, show never has dull moments. Especially with the three characters in the “waldgrave” family. They are a hoot! Enjoy!

Not funny script. The Nerd

A nerd by definition is a person who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject. This play is not about a nerd but someone with limited intelligence and displays immature and deficient behavior far below their age. This is not funny as it seems to be making fun of people who have intellectual disabilities. Even when you find out the truth in the end, it doesn’t save the show.

Disappointed

It's hard to imagine that I'd be so disappointed with an Alley Theater production. The word that comes to mind is overwrought - the acting seemed overwrought, melodramatic, just plain silly. Yes, it's a silly play with a silly premise but it looked like the actors were directed to overplay every line, every motion. A well known and celebrated actor once said that the most comedic way for an actor to deliver their lines is for the character to not be aware that what he or she is saying is funny. In this production, the actors performed as if they were told to act just the opposite. There were a few instances of genuine, subtle side glances or dryly ironic delivery but almost all lines delivered by all characters at all times were, "Look at me! I'm saying/doing something funny!" Seriously, I've seen better work in an amateur theater. Other than that, the set was very nice.

Awful

The Alley and its resident cast are outstanding, but this one misses the mark. This may have been funny when it was written decades ago, but it has not stood the test of time. The only reason we didn't leave at intermission was our desire not to disrespect the cast and crew we have grown to love.

So so bad.

My wife and I have been to MANY theatre productions. Not all are great and we get that. We have walked out on 2 or 3 that didn't hit the mark and we get that too. Sneak out at intermission so as not to be a distraction to those around us. As for this mess, we couldn't wait for intermission. Good grief. This thing called The Nerd was about as bad as it gets. Bad writing. Bad characters. Some insulting attempts at ''humor''. I knew we may be in trouble when we arrived to bunch of empty seats and sections covered with the black cloth so as not to make it look worse than it was. Anyway, one person's opinion only.
