What is the story?

Madama butterfly is the sad tale of Cio Cio or 'Butterfly', a young Japanese girl who believes that with her marriage to US Naval officer Pinkerton, she has found lasting happiness. But her devotion is misguided, and Pinkerton only sees her and their marriage as a stepping stone for his return to America to find his 'true bride'. Unaware of this fact, the besotted Butterfly waits for her husband to come back to Japan, only to discover that she has been found wanting...

Please note: this opera contains depictions of suicide.
