Why see Houston Ballet: Cinderella?
A Modern Fairy Tale
Continuing their 2023/24 season that celebrates the 20-year anniversary of Stanton Welch's Artistic Directorship, the Houston Ballet revives his iconic and empowering staging of Cinderella. A fresh new take on the familiar tale, Cinderella features lavish scenery and spectacular costumes by the late New Zealand designer Kristian Fredrickson
This is Cinderella as you've never seen her before. Originally premiering in 2008, Stanton Welch's take on Prokofiev's classic ballet repositions its title character as a gutsy tomboy, who's very much in control of her own destiny!
What is the story?
As everyone knows, Cinderella is the story of of a young girl forced into servitude by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. When a ball is organized by the king, the stepsisters are ecstatic, desperate to grab their chance to impress the eligible young prince, but as it turns out, with a little help from a fairy godmother, it is Cinderella who is the belle of the ball!
