Why See Houston Grand Opera: Requiem?
Loss, fear, hope and joy
Created in response to his grief at the passing of his friend Manzoni, Verdi's Requiem is a truly powerful piece, from the instantly recognizable Dies Irae (or funeral march) to the sublime finale. With the entire Houston Grand Opera of 180 performers and musicians, Requiem promises to be an emotional night as Verdi's profound sense of loss is translated into this symphonic masterpiece.
First performed in 1874 conducted by Verdi himself, this dramatic work has become one of the world's favorite requiem, second only to Mozart's.
